Your marketing dashboard can report a real purchase, connect it to a real ad impression, and still mislead you about whether the advertising created the sale.
The transaction happened. The causal claim remains unproven.
That distinction should govern your budget.
Attribution assigns credit. It does not establish necessity.
A customer already intends to buy. They visit your website, receive a retargeting impression, and purchase tomorrow. The platform records a conversion within its attribution window. Your agency presents the result as evidence of advertising performance.
Would the customer have purchased without that impression?
The dashboard cannot answer that question from the sequence alone. It needs a credible comparison. Otherwise, you may be paying to intercept demand your business already earned through location, reputation, product availability, previous advertising, or customer loyalty.
Missing identity creates modeled connections.
Apple requires permission for specified tracking across other companies’ apps and websites. Browser restrictions, consent choices, and cross-device behavior also limit observable advertising journeys. There is no universal, uninterrupted identity trail. [1]
Google explains that modeled conversions estimate attribution when the connection between an advertising interaction and a conversion cannot be observed directly. Its reporting can combine observed and modeled conversions. Modeling can improve decisions, but a modeled connection is still an estimate. [2]
The failure occurs when an agency sells that estimate as absolute certainty.
Demand the measurement method, the reporting limitations, and the distinction between an observed event and an inferred advertising relationship.
View-through credit can capture existing demand.
Google defines view-through conversions as conversions occurring after someone sees an ad without interacting with it. Its documentation also states that longer view-through windows usually increase recorded view-through conversions. Reporting treatment varies by campaign type. [3]
That is a crediting mechanism, not automatic evidence of causal lift.
Retargeting makes the distinction especially important. People selected because they recently demonstrated purchase intent are already different from people who did not. Their conversion rate cannot establish advertising effectiveness without addressing that selection.
Stop asking only which platform claimed the customer. Ask whether the investment produced additional customers.
The supply chain can consume value before delivery.
The ANA’s June 2023 programmatic transparency findings reported that made-for-advertising sites received 15% of spending in the studied sample. That historical finding is not an estimate of your current exposure. It is a reason to inspect your placements. [4]
MFA inventory, invalid traffic, non-viewable impressions, and intermediary charges are different problems. Combining them into one dramatic “fraud” number creates another misleading dashboard.
Inspect domains, seller records, invoices, verification coverage, and fee definitions separately.
Deliverable Media starts with procurement reality.
TIER Media Group defines Deliverable Media as advertising purchased against explicit placement, geography, timing, quantity, and verification requirements.
Broadcast television, terrestrial radio, Out-of-Home, and Direct Mail provide concrete distribution or placement obligations. Digital media requires equivalent scrutiny of inventory and supply paths.
Delivery evidence establishes what was supplied. It does not guarantee attention or commercial success.
That is why execution and measurement must work together.
Incrementality requires a counterfactual.
Google’s geo-experiment research describes randomly assigning non-overlapping geographic regions to treatment and control conditions. The comparison estimates what changes when advertising changes. [5]
A competent media partner starts with reconciled business data, checks test power, controls contamination, defines response windows, and reports uncertainty.
TIER’s operating standard is molecular: inspect the buy, reconcile delivery, disclose costs, and test incremental outcomes where feasible.
Your CFO deserves the assumptions alongside the result. Negative and inconclusive findings belong in the report too.
That accountability belongs in every procurement and budget decision.
Stop buying certainty from people who cannot demonstrate it.
Audit your attribution. Inspect your media economics. Fund the demand you can defend.
THE NEXT DECISION
Inspect the claims behind your dashboard.
Bring the buying records. We will identify what can be verified, what is being estimated, and what needs to be tested.
