WHO WE HELP / FINANCIAL SERVICES

Media planning for
financial services.

Build trust in the institution and connect acquisition reporting with opened, funded and activated accounts. TIER plans and buys media for financial-services businesses around specific products, branch or service coverage and relationship economics. Upper-funnel branding and product-level demand capture need distinct roles in the same plan.

TIER’S PLANNING VIEW

Where media can support the business.

Use CTV, broadcast, streaming audio, radio, outdoor and online video to establish familiarity and explain the institution’s proposition. Use search to capture product-specific demand; appropriate social and programmatic activity can support consideration. Separate checking, savings, CDs, mortgages, HELOCs, auto loans, personal loans and business banking briefs. Awareness cannot be judged solely by immediate applications, and applications cannot stand in for funded relationships.

SOURCED CONTEXT / PLANNING IMPLICATIONS

What the category data tells us.

48.3% primarily used mobile banking

The FDIC’s 2023 survey reports that 48.3% of banked households primarily accessed accounts through mobile banking. That supports an evaluation of the digital application experience alongside local brand reach; it does not establish which ad channel will acquire an account.

4.2% were unbanked

The same survey found 4.2% of U.S. households lacked a bank or credit-union account. Distinguish switching institutions, adding products and serving first-time account holders. This national estimate is not a local audience list or a permitted targeting criterion.

EXECUTION THAT MATTERS

Best practices before and during the buy.

  1. Define account-level outcomes inside the institution’s systems.

Agree on inquiry, application, approval, opening, funding, activation and retention definitions for each product. Use restricted internal customer and account identifiers to reconcile source records, not account numbers in advertising tags. Distinguish net-new relationships, additional products for existing customers, duplicates and bonus-driven churn. For deposits, evaluate sustained balances and relationship contribution; for lending, review funded principal and product economics rather than only submitted forms.

  2. Use customer and address data for allocation and permitted audiences.

With approved providers, review customer geography, branch catchments, product penetration and eligible first-party segments. Appends may inform planning where lawful and appropriate, but they are not permission to target restricted personal traits or infer creditworthiness. TIER coordinates audience briefs, exclusions and measurement definitions; the institution and its providers govern data preparation and eligibility. Review financial-product platform classifications, privacy obligations and the actual licensed use before activation.

  3. Connect sources to accounts over a realistic lag.

Maintain campaign identifiers and suitable source records through application and funding. Compare medium, campaign, geography, placement and inquiry cohort with opened and funded accounts, activation and agreed retention intervals. State unknown sources and incomplete matching rather than assigning every account. Exposure-based associations and last-click records answer different questions. Deduplicate customer relationships and keep attribution separate from controlled incrementality analysis.

  4. Protect brand investment while testing acquisition economics.

Give broad reach a defined market, message and evaluation period. Review suitable brand indicators alongside product demand and market-level account growth. A customer may see television, later search the brand and finally open in a branch; search’s last click does not prove it created the relationship. For feasible tests, compare outcome changes with appropriate markets or holdouts, accounting for rate changes, bonuses, branch activity and competition.

INDUSTRY FALLACIES

Claims worth challenging.

“The cheapest application campaign wins.”

Funding, sustained balances, activation and retention can differ by source. A bonus claimant and a durable primary relationship should not receive the same assumed value.

“A funded account establishes perfect attribution.”

It verifies a business outcome. Linking it to a source is useful, but does not show what would have happened without the media.

“Brand media is unmeasurable overhead.”

It can be evaluated with a defined design and appropriate indicators. Demanding an immediate click from every exposure biases allocation toward existing demand capture.

CATEGORY-SPECIFIC APPLICATION

Different offers need different plans.

Checking, savings and CDs

Keep APY, eligibility, minimum balances, bonus conditions and required disclosures current. Assess funding and sustained relationships. Coordinate acquisition and cross-sell so existing customers do not inflate new-customer results.

Mortgages, HELOCs, auto and personal loans

Separate inquiry, approval and funding; account for product-specific timelines and current targeting constraints. Evaluate offer economics and appropriate geographic eligibility without using audience models as underwriting.

Business banking and advisory services

Explain commercial checking, treasury or cash-management services and relationship expertise where offered. Define qualified consultations and resulting accounts separately. Advice and investment messaging requires its own approval process; product credibility and upper-funnel trust remain part of the brief.

QUESTIONS BEFORE COMMITTING BUDGET

What a buyer should ask.

  • Which account event and relationship value justify acquisition spend?
  • Can openings and funding be reconciled with sources without exposing sensitive records?
  • How are existing customers, duplicates and funding lag handled?
  • How will rates, incentives and brand effects be distinguished from media changes?
