WHO WE HELP / RETAIL & FURNITURE
Media planning for
retail and furniture.
Use customer and transaction data to buy the markets that can support profitable store growth. TIER plans and buys media for retailers and furniture businesses around trading areas, product categories, inventory and promotion calendars. Digital response is only part of the picture when a customer researches online and pays at the store.

TIER’S PLANNING VIEW
Where media can support the business.
Use search and eligible shopping formats for expressed product demand; social and online video for discovery and demonstration; CTV, broadcast, radio and outdoor for market familiarity and major promotions. Coordinate the offer, stock and store information across those touchpoints. TIER plans address and CRM analysis with your existing providers so allocation reflects real customers rather than a circular radius chosen by habit.
SOURCED CONTEXT / PLANNING IMPLICATIONS
What the category data tells us.
17.1% e-commerce share
The Census Bureau estimates e-commerce at 17.1% of total U.S. retail sales in Q2 2026 on a seasonally adjusted basis. That national figure supports measuring beyond web checkouts; it does not describe a furniture store’s own online share or imply that all remaining sales are attributable to local advertising.
Different growth rates
In the same release, e-commerce increased 12.2% year over year while total retail increased 6.7%, seasonally adjusted. Review online and store outcomes separately before changing the media mix. These are national growth estimates, not TIER performance results.
EXECUTION THAT MATTERS
Best practices before and during the buy.
Build the trade area from actual customer addresses.
Start with POS or CRM transactions, store, purchase date, order identifier, product category, net sale, returns and permitted customer identifiers. Ask your providers to standardize addresses, handle apartments, deduplicate households and document missing records. Study customer penetration and value by geography, travel area and store. Mailing, shipping and billing addresses can differ; household matching should not quietly merge unrelated customers or credit one purchase to several stores.
Use approved appends to sharpen hypotheses and reduce avoidable spend.
Property, household or new-mover appends may help test furniture, appliance and home-category opportunities when the source and use are appropriate. Compare existing high-value customers, lapsed customers, new households and prospects separately. Match or suppress customers only through permitted platform methods. Appended or purchased identifiers are not automatically eligible for Customer Match. TIER coordinates the brief and buying choices; your approved providers perform the data work.
Measure sales across media without manufacturing precision.
Reconcile order IDs and suitable customer or address records with campaign response and supplier exposure data where available and permitted. State the match method, coverage, observation window and unmatched share. Compare medium, placement, creative, geography and promotion period against net sales, margin, new households and repeat purchase. An address match to a CTV or mail record describes an association; it does not prove attention or lift. Evaluate broad broadcast, radio and outdoor through geographic outcomes and controlled comparisons rather than inventing a person-level trail.
Optimize the commercial outcome, not a visit estimate.
Separate prospecting, retention and retargeting; report discounts, returns and inventory constraints. Google store-visit reporting is modeled for eligible accounts, not an individual purchase ledger. Use store and product-category outcomes over an appropriate purchase lag. Test media changes against comparable stores or markets where practical, documenting price, stock, competition and simultaneous promotions.
INDUSTRY FALLACIES
Claims worth challenging.
“Online ad reporting captures the entire retail sale.”+
It can miss in-store outcomes and over-credit warm shoppers. Combine platform diagnostics with POS or CRM outcomes and appropriate testing.
“An address match is a verified incremental customer.”+
Addresses can be shared, stale or missing. A reliable match is useful evidence of record linkage, not a counterfactual or a guarantee that a specific household member saw the ad.
“A new-mover list automatically beats broad reach.”+
Timing and product fit matter. Compare usable audience size, data costs, match coverage and incremental outcomes; a narrowly described audience can cost more without creating additional sales.
CATEGORY-SPECIFIC APPLICATION
Different offers need different plans.
Furniture, mattresses and appliances
Use product demonstrations and room context to build consideration. Plan around delivery coverage, inventory and the move or replacement cycle. Assess category margin and completed sales after cancellations.
Multi-store retail
Use store-level customer addresses to detect overlapping trading areas. Avoid counting the same household as a new acquisition for multiple stores. Allocate by opportunity and operational capacity, then compare store cohorts.
Promotion-led and repeat-purchase retail
Keep offers and loyalty economics explicit. Separate customers returning for a discount from new profitable relationships. Appropriate suppression and holdouts can help assess whether promotional media adds sales beyond the existing base.
QUESTIONS BEFORE COMMITTING BUDGET
What a buyer should ask.
- Which store and household records are reliable enough to use?
- What share of sales is matchable, and which customers are absent?
- What remains after discounts, returns, data fees and margin?
- Which geographic or store comparison can separate advertising from promotion and stock effects?
