TIER’S PLANNING VIEW

When this earns a place in the plan.

Paid social is often a demand-generation and message-testing tool before it is a dependable demand-capture tool. Its job is to make the right audience understand and consider the offer. Retargeting has a different job and should not borrow prospecting’s acquisition claim.

Use it when the proposition benefits from demonstration, visual proof, repeated exposure or a clear reason to act. It can support product discovery, service awareness and qualified inquiries. It struggles when an undifferentiated offer is paired with weak creative and the buying system is rewarded for any form fill.

EXECUTION THAT MATTERS

Best practices before and during the buy.

  1. Separate audience roles.

Budget and report prospecting, retargeting and existing-customer activity distinctly where the buying setup permits. Review audience overlap and the assumptions used to exclude customers. A small warm audience can appear efficient while contributing little new reach.

  2. Test messages that make a different commercial argument.

A new crop or button color is not a new hypothesis. Test the problem, proof, offer and reason to act. Keep placement adaptations appropriate to the format, and allow enough delivery and response time to distinguish a creative idea from random variation.

  3. Connect qualification to campaign decisions.

Define an accepted inquiry and review downstream outcomes, not just platform lead volume. Add proportionate form questions when needed. Consider lift studies or other controlled tests when scale permits; Meta’s Conversion Lift uses randomized test and control groups, unlike ordinary attribution reporting.

INDUSTRY FALLACIES

Claims worth challenging.

“Low lead cost is the winning creative.”

Cheap forms can come from weak intent, incentives or a frictionless path that attracts the wrong customer. Compare accepted opportunities and commercial value.

“Retargeting return is acquisition return.”

Warm audiences may already be on their way to purchase. Retargeting can help, but its attributed return needs context about pre-existing demand.

“A small audience gives perfect targeting.”

Narrow selections can limit reach and delivery without guaranteeing that the people reached fit the business. Review actual outcomes, frequency and available targeting restrictions.

CATEGORY-SPECIFIC APPLICATION

The tactic changes with the business.

Retail and furniture

Use room context, product proof and a credible local reason to visit. Coordinate creative with stock and promotions. Keep catalog, discovery and retargeting roles distinct so a sale already likely to occur does not become the campaign’s whole success story.

Home services

Show the work, explain the service area and qualify the job type. Seasonal maintenance and planned replacements need different offers from emergency repairs. Avoid promising immediate availability when dispatch cannot deliver it.

Housing, healthcare and finance

Start with the offer’s classification and the platform’s current restrictions. An audience technique suitable for a sofa promotion may be inappropriate for a housing offer or a health-related service. Build approved targeting and measurement into the brief.

YOUR DATA / BETTER BUYING DECISIONS

Put customer insight to work.

Separate prospect acquisition, customer retention and retargeting; review customer exclusions and outcome quality instead of letting inexpensive forms define success. TIER plans and coordinates CRM analysis, address hygiene and approved appends with the client’s existing providers. Separate observed first-party records, licensed appended attributes and modeled audience inferences. Agree on provenance, freshness, permitted use, match coverage and fees before buying. Use eligible data to support allocation, appropriate customer exclusions and outcome analysis. For activation, purchased or appended contact identifiers are not automatically eligible for Google Customer Match; its policy requires information collected in a first-party context. Sensitive-category and platform restrictions still apply.

QUESTIONS BEFORE COMMITTING BUDGET

What a buyer should ask.

  • Is this budget buying new reach, warm reminders or customer retention?
  • Which creative tests change the message rather than only the artwork?
  • What share of platform leads becomes an accepted opportunity?
  • Which attribution windows or view-through credits influence the reported result?
