TIER’S PLANNING VIEW
When this earns a place in the plan.
Paid search is strongest when the customer has an identifiable need and your business can fulfil it. The buying decision is how much additional qualified demand each query group can capture at an acceptable cost. A low cost per form submission is useful only when those submissions turn into work worth doing.
Use search to capture service, product and location-specific intent, defend strategically important brand queries, and learn how customers describe the problem. It is a weaker starting point for an unfamiliar category that people do not yet know to search for. Broader reach media may need to build that demand first.
EXECUTION THAT MATTERS
Best practices before and during the buy.
Set the conversion hierarchy before setting the bid strategy.
Separate raw inquiries, qualified opportunities and completed sales. Agree which events count toward bidding and which remain diagnostic. When access and permissions allow, use CRM outcome feedback to reduce the incentive to buy cheap but unqualified leads. Google supports distinct qualified and converted lead actions; using them still requires sound business definitions.
Control intent and the service area.
Review search terms, exclusions, brand/non-brand allocation and landing-page relevance. For a business that cannot serve customers outside a territory, assess presence-based location settings and actual delivery. Google’s presence-or-interest option can reach people outside the area who express interest in it; geographic settings are estimates, not a boundary guarantee.
Judge the next dollar, not only the account average.
A blended return can conceal profitable brand capture and expensive non-brand expansion. Review cost and qualified outcomes by intent, territory and service line. Make changes in a way that allows for the sales lag, rather than cutting a campaign because yesterday’s leads have not closed yet.
INDUSTRY FALLACIES
Claims worth challenging.
“More conversions means better acquisition.”+
Adding page views or low-value actions to the primary goal can improve the dashboard while weakening the business result. More counted events are not necessarily more customers.
“Brand search proves the ads created the demand.”+
Brand queries often reflect familiarity built elsewhere. Buying them may have a defensive role, but attributed sales do not establish that the brand ad caused those sales.
“Automation makes query review unnecessary.”+
Automation can improve execution. It does not define a qualified customer, fix the offer or decide which service territories the business should accept.
CATEGORY-SPECIFIC APPLICATION
The tactic changes with the business.
Home services
Separate urgent repair intent from replacement research and maintenance. Match calls to operating hours, dispatch boundaries and capacity. Review booked and completed jobs by service line; a low-value repair lead should not receive the same assumed value as a replacement opportunity.
Retail and furniture
Distinguish product searches, category research and store-location intent. Keep advertised availability, pricing and destination pages current. Where local inventory ads fit, evaluate the feed and store data before treating them as an acquisition shortcut.
Healthcare and financial services
Define acceptable lead events and permitted data flows with the client. Review offer-specific targeting and advertising restrictions. Do not assume that customer-match uploads or detailed audience targeting are appropriate simply because the platform provides the feature.
YOUR DATA / BETTER BUYING DECISIONS
Put customer insight to work.
Use accepted opportunities and completed outcomes to evaluate intent groups; keep permitted offline feedback distinct from the client’s private CRM record. TIER plans and coordinates CRM analysis, address hygiene and approved appends with the client’s existing providers. Separate observed first-party records, licensed appended attributes and modeled audience inferences. Agree on provenance, freshness, permitted use, match coverage and fees before buying. Use eligible data to support allocation, appropriate customer exclusions and outcome analysis. For activation, purchased or appended contact identifiers are not automatically eligible for Google Customer Match; its policy requires information collected in a first-party context. Sensitive-category and platform restrictions still apply.
QUESTIONS BEFORE COMMITTING BUDGET
What a buyer should ask.
- Which events influence bidding, and what does each represent commercially?
- How much spend and qualified demand sit in brand versus non-brand queries?
- Does the geography reflect customers we can actually serve?
- What happens to the apparent return after cancellations, duplicates and sales lag?
